Nine HHS students compete in league weightlifting contest

Staff writer

Nine Hillsboro High School students competed in the 2002 MCAA League Weightlifting contest Jan. 19 at Sterling.

"This was the most students we've taken to this competition," Coach Kory Unruh said. "I thought the students did phenomenal."

Unruh took students who are either in his lifetime fitness or weightlifting classes this year.

The Trojans received six first place finishes in the different categories of squat, clean and bench; four second place; seven third place; and three fourth place.

"I was very pleased with their efforts," he said. "The girls did extremely well."

Senior Shannon Kroeker broke the old record of 140 cleans by putting up 150. Kroeker now holds the record.

"Sheldon and Alan did exceptionally well at this meet," Unruh said. "They each won their divisions."

Senior Sheldon Funk tied the record of 245 on cleans. He placed first all-around in the 148-pound weight class.

Junior Alan Yoder tied the record of 385 on squat. Yoder placed first all-around in the 165- pound weight class.

Senior Adam Woods shattered the old record of 285 on cleans when he put up 310. Unfortunately, his record was beaten later in the day by five pounds. Woods placed second all-around in the 220-pound weight class.

"This was a good experience for the kids, and I hope to take more students to the state meet in March," Unruh said. "We will try to go to a few invitational weightlifting meets before that state meet."
