Northwest of Durham: Dirks enjoy traveling and visiting with daughter

Bruce and Cheryl Dirks and Bethany left Aug. 18 to visit their daughter and husband, Heather and Allen Martin at Shippensburg, Pa. They went to New York Sunday to visit a mission the church supports. It was very interesting. On Tuesday they spent time sightseeing at Washington, D.C. They returned home on Thursday.
The community was shocked when they heard Clarence Bartel, 80, had died Tuesday. Our sympathy is extended to Ann and her family. The services were Friday at Enterprise with burial in Durham Cemetery. He was a lifetime resident of the community and farmed many years. He will be missed by all.
A group of parents and teachers for the coming year got together Sunday for a basket dinner at Cottonwood Grove School.
Guests from here for Sunday dinner at the home of Doug and Starla Koehn were Ken and Sandy Wiebe, Dale and Kathy Jantz and Ruthann, Mitch and Carol Unruh and Deryk, and Irvin Isaac.
Ransom and Lillian Wiebe, the Jason Wiebe family, Tim and Shelia Koehn and Jared, Marcel and Wendy Unruh and Joel, and the Calvin Wiebe family went to give a program Sunday at Mercy Hospital and the Manor at Moundridge. Ransom was the speaker and the others presented musical numbers. These programs always are welcomed by the residents. Ransom and Lillian went to the Manor later to listen to church services and had dinner and visited with Alice Unruh and Helen Wiebe.
Wayne and Loralee Wiebe invited Roy and Nadine Davis, Rhonda and Eileen, Duane and Louise Ratzlaff and Rayletta, and Henry Redger to be their Sunday dinner guests.

Former residents of this community, Arden and Judy Wiebe, now of Texahoma, Texas, are proud parents of a baby girl born July 26. Sierra Nichole was welcomed by her three brothers. Paternal grandparents, Ken and Sandy Wiebe went to Texas Aug. 14 to get acquainted with their granddaughter and visit the family.
Ruston and Lydia Dirks hosted a dinner Aug. 9 for grandparents Nick and Dorothy (Wiebe) Toews of Lobbelville, Tenn. Dorothy taught school here a number of years ago. Other guests were Wendell and Linda Wedel, Melvin and Vera Dirks, Ransom and Lillian Wiebe, and Clayton and Betty Wiebe.
Wendell and Linda Wedel went to Fredonia Aug. 13 for the weekend. That evening they joined the rest of the Mayeskea family for a picnic at the park at Independence. They spent Sunday with Linda's mother.
Those attending funeral services for Mabel Rhodes Aug. 14 at Montezuma were Harry and Sheryle Rhodes, Clayton and Betty Wiebe, and Ken and Sandy Wiebe.
Mike and Mich Rhodes and Madison moved July 1 to Bradley, Ark. They have purchased a house and returned Aug 10 to move their household belongings. A farewell was given for them at Morning Star Church. Calvin and Janene Wiebe took their pickup and helped them move to Arkansas. The Rhodes will be working on a fish farm with Mich's brother.
The youth and sponsors from Morning Star Church went to Alexanderfeld Church at Hillsboro Thursday and helped put together Spanish tracts to be used in mission work.
Joseph and Brenda Johnson and family from Alabama have been visiting in the area. They have spent time with their parents, the Richard Wiebes.
The Davis family had a dinner Sunday at Grand Oaks at Hillsboro. Guests were Gerald and Eva Davis, Roy and Nadine Davis, Rhonda and Eileen, Dalton and Lorna Wiebe, Richard and Charlotte Wiebe and boys, John and Ethel Steiner, Rick and LaVae Koehn, and Harold Davis of McPherson. A group got together Monday evening at Hillsboro park in honor of the Johnson family and to visit with them.
Dinner guests Sunday at the home of Harry and Lela Wedel were Warren and Jane Unruh, Harry and Sheryle Rhodes, Merlin and Karletta Wiebe and family, and Henry Redger.
Clayton and Betty Wiebe invited their family for Sunday dinner. Attending were Calvin and Janene Wiebe and family, Nelson and Bev Wiebe and family, Travis and Sharon Koehn and family, and Wayne and Loralee Wiebe and family.
Ransom and Lillian Wiebe went Aug. 14 to the 50th wedding anniversary of Wayne and Gloria Koehn at Ulysses. Gloria is Lillian's first cousin. The Wiebes went Friday afternoon to Kansas City to get their granddaughter, Kristi Koehn of California at the airport. She will be teaching at Cottonwood Grove Christian School this coming year.
Going to the home of Jerold and Rhonda Koehn for dinner Sunday were Mitch and Carol Unruh and Deryk, Troy and Marla Wiebe and family, and Ransom and Lillian Wiebe.
Those having Sunday dinner at the home of Ken and Sandy Wiebe were the Doyle Wiebe family, Cindy Troyer and daughter Beth of Ohio, and Manford and Delores Nichols of Montezuma. The Nichols are parents of Cindy and an aunt and uncle of Doyle.
Cottonwood Grove Christian School's fall term began Aug. 29. Teachers of the lower grades are Kristi Koehn of California; middle grades, Beth Troyer of Ohio; and upper grades, Monica Goessen of Georgia.
