Northwest of Durham: Summer has arrived

Durham correspondent

It seems like summertime truly has arrived here. The last few days have been close to the 90s and above. After a week of little rain, the farmers have been able to cut hay and alfalfa, plant milo, and there has been some wheat cut on Saturday. I'm sure everyone else will be harvesting this coming week. Many farmers hardly know which job to do first since we had all the rains and everyone got behind with work.

A large crowd gathered at the Cottonwood Grove School to wish Ransom and Lillian Wiebe a happy fiftieth anniversary. Congratulations! Their children Frank and Karen Unruh, and Russell and Jane Koehn both from California, Justin and Rebecca Wiebe and family from Bloomfield, Iowa, Justin and Sheri Wiebe and family, and most of the grandchildren, some who are married from California, were in attendance and hosted the event.

Sunday dinner guests at the home of Mark and Barb Unruh for Father's Day dinner were Ron and Dora Unruh and Chad and Hillary Stutzman of Hillsboro.

Guests for Sunday dinner at the home of Doyle and Kara Wiebe were his uncle and aunt Manfred and Delores Nichols of Copeland.

Roy and Nadine Davis had Gerald and Eva Davis, Rick and LaVae Koehn, Rick's parents Roger and Geneva Koehn, Tim Burns, and grandparents Arnold Koehns of Newton over for Sunday dinner.

The Simeon Yoder family from Sparta, Wisc., who had come for the Thayer-Morrison wedding, were Wednesday and Thursday overnight guests of Harry and Sheryle Rhodes.

Clayton and Betty Wiebe left Monday for the funeral service of Betty's niece, Robin Wedel, 43, at Phoenix, Ariz. They returned on Wednesday. The community extends their sympathy.

On Wednesday evening Greg and Charlene Wedel and Caden and Travis and Connie Becker got together at the home of Wendell and Linda Wedel for supper. They helped Charlene celebrate her birthday.

The wedding of Maggie Thayer, daughter of Richard and Ruth Thayer, to Jim Morrison from Minnesota took place Thursday at the Center Amish Mennonite Church near Hutchinson. Those attending the wedding from here were Palmer and Lucille Base, Harry and Sheryle Rhodes, Mark and Kris Wiebe and family, Ken and Sandy Wiebe, and Ron and Doris Wiebert. The young couple will make their home in Florida. Congratulations!
