Northwest of Durham: Summer reading program draws crowds
Durham correspondent
The Durham Community Library during the summer's library program averaged about 14 children per week for six weeks. A number of days as many as 20 came.
We divided into two groups. Ginger Becker assisted by Valera Hamm kept the older group busy with a study focused on water and earthworms. The young group directed by Mary Helen Becker enjoyed stories, pretend camping in an indoor tent, games, and art work.
Each day opened with a study of Alaska with maps, pictures, snapshots, booklets, and items purchased in Alaska by directors.
Snacks were served each day and one birthday was celebrated by Caleb Herbel bringing treats for everyone.
On our closing day the library treated all participants to ice cream cones at the café next door.
Two hundred fifty books were read by the children and parents. Adeline Kuchda assisted those checking books both in and out.
The summer program was a great tool in helping children to value the use of the library facilities.
Pre-school children three years old and older are encouraged and welcome to the school-year program beginning on Sept. 3 from 10 to 11 a.m. and continuing every Wednesday unless notified by the system librarian, Mary Helen Becker.
