Not always an eyesore

Manufactured housing — that phrase is a mouthful. It's easier to say "mobile home" or "trailer."

But manufactured housing is the more accurate term. Because that's what it is — a house.

Today's manufactured housing is more than a long rectangular box to be stacked in a "trailer park." It's a viable alternative for those who can't afford the traditional home but don't want to be stuck renting.

The Hillsboro Planning Commission has discussed manufactured housing in several of its recent meetings. They haven't decided anything yet, but they're contemplating creating a district specifically zoned for manufactured housing.

Many people, when they think of such a place, aren't excited. Because — let's be honest — some mobile home parks aren't in the best condition.

And you don't get a real "neighborhood feel" when you look down a street to see row upon row of rectangular structures.

But today's manufactured homes are different. They have siding, sloped roofs, even attached garages. They run parallel to the street.

They can look like any other normally constructed home.

If Hillsboro fears that a manufactured home district would become an eyesore, it shouldn't. According to a city planning consultant, that district can have as many regulations as the city wants, right down to allowing pets.

Strict regulations — and the enforcement of them — would ensure an attractive neighborhood.

Bottom line: The city needs affordable housing. That's what keeps residents, and that's what brings in new companies and industries.

Hillsboro needs to take a serious look at the possibility of a new manufactured home district.
