Nursing to be explored at Oct. 4 LRP

Gregg Schroeder, Goessel, will present "From Aristocracy to Care Givers" at the Monday, Oct. 4, 60+ Learning in Retirement session at 10 a.m. at Wohlgemuth Music Center.

Schroeder, a Bethel College nursing faculty member since 1992 and current interim director of nursing, will explore the historical background and heroism of Russia's volunteer nurses, including those who provided nursing care at the front of the Crimean War.

He and his wife Cindy, both of German-Russian descent, have traveled to the former Soviet Union several times over the last 10 years with groups of college students to study the fine arts as well as health care. Next spring he will lead another trip to Moscow.

Schroeder has always been passionate about nursing in Russia.

"Long before the British nurse Florence Nightingale carried her lamp to care for the soldiers in the Crimea, Russian nurses were alleviating suffering through compassionate care," he said.

The program will begin with an update on the Tabor College Wichita nursing program. Tona Leiker, chair of the nursing department department at TCW, will speak.

Older adults are invited to attend. Enrollment is $15 per person a semester, $28 per couple or $4 a session. In an effort to encourage participation, first-time visitors will be admitted free-of-charge. Registration and discount lunch cards will be available at the door beginning at 9:30 a.m.
