Officers assist sheriff's department
Hillsboro Police officers assisted the Marion County Sheriff's Department Aug. 6 in looking for Lon D. Kerbs of rural Durham who was reportedly intoxicated and on his way to Hillsboro allegedly threatening to kill Karen Sklenar.
Officer Jessey Hiebert located Kerbs at 302 W. Third in Hillsboro. Kerbs was exiting his vehicle with a 30/30 high-powered rifle when Hiebert made contact. Hiebert was attempting to get the suspect to surrender the weapon when Officer Dan Kinning arrived on the scene.
The two officers continued to plead with Kerbs to drop the rifle and were able to take him into custody without incident. Kerbs had in his possession a fully loaded rifle and a loaded semi-auto pistol in the front seat of his vehicle.
Deputy Roland Schmidt and Deputy Garry Klose of Marion County Sheriff's Department headed the investigation through the sheriff's department. Kerbs was arrested for criminal threat and D.U.I. and is being held in Marion County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
The victim, Sklenar, of Hillsboro was uninjured.
