Ona Donahue

Ona Mary Esther Smith Donahue, 96, of Hillsboro died Aug. 7, 2002, at Hillsboro Community Medical Center in Hillsboro.

Born June 27, 1906, at Durham, she was the daughter of Cameron D. and Amelia (Weimer) Smith.

In 1924, she graduated from Durham High School. In 1928, she graduated from Kansas University with a degree in education. Later she earned a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin.

In 1930 at Colorado Springs, Colo., she married Daniel Hubert Donahue. They had one son, James C. Donahue. Her husband has been deceased for many years.

Her first teaching position was in Saratoga, Wyo. Later she taught in Gering, Neb., and Huntley, Wyo. She retired from teaching after nearly 30 years at Green Bay, Wis. She was member of the Retired Teachers Association and various other educational organizations.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years at Green Bay. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a avid KU basketball fan and a Green Bay Packers football fan.

She spent her remaining years in Durham.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Betty Smith.

Survivors include son, James C. Donahue and wife Joan of Durham-Lincolnville; brother, Gilman Smith of Salina; sister, Irene Houser of Abilene; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 10 at Zeiner Funeral Home in Marion with Pastor Ransom Wiebe officiating.

Music was provided by the Morning Star Mennonite Church choir. Lois Winter served as organist.

Casketbearers were Dudley Donahue, Timothy Donahue, Andrew Donahue, David Hein, Tim Svoboda, and Glennon Crowther. Honorary casketbearer was Ryan Donahue.

Burial was at Durham Park Cemetery in Durham.

A memorial fund has been established with the Morning Star Mennonite Church in care of Zeiner Funeral Home.
