One down: USD 410 students start school year years ago
Staff writer
USD 410 students filled the hallways of the high, middle, and elementary schools last Friday.
We decided to ask a few questions of students and staff at the elementary school to see how that "first day" of school went.
Shannon and Layne Heiser are the twin son and daughter of Kim and Larry Heiser of rural Hillsboro.
When asked how their first day of school went, Layne and Shannon both replied, "Good."
Both said their teacher Mrs. (Tracy) Boldt was "nice."
When asked what activity they enjoyed the most, Layne replied, "playing."
He also said he did not care for doing work or homework.
As for his first day as the new Hillsboro Elementary School principal, Evan Yoder said his day went well.
Yoder is no stranger to HES. He taught first grade for eight years before advancing to become middle school principal in 1991.
Yoder expressed feeling a little overwhelmed with learning a lot the students' names.
"Learning a child's name is important, so not knowing the names of the students yet is my biggest frustration," he said.
Yoder expressed some of the challenges he will face as HES principal.
Number one, he said, would be to learn the 260 plus names of the students. But, Yoder reiterated that this will be a priority for him.
Also, getting to know his staff, which includes more personnel than in middle school. He said he will have to learn their styles.
When asked, "At the end of that 'first' day, what thoughts came to mind?"
Yoder replied, "How impressed I was with the teachers. And how they made the first day of school run smoothly."
He said being at the elementary school is a lot different from the middle school. He now has several different responsibilities at the elementary that he did not have at the middle school. Some things he did on the middle school level he does not have to do on the elementary level.
"For one thing lunch is different," he said. "I find that all the little things, the everyday things, are different
"I have to re-familiarize myself with HES," he said. "I have a lot to learn."
