One-hour parking could be instituted across from high school

Signs will be posted if residents give OK

The Goessel City Council met Aug. 14 in the Goessel Civic Center community room.

The council voted to authorize Officer Joe Base to put up one hour parking signs along Main Street between Church Street and Summit Street if the residents living along there are agreeable to it.

Public works director Arlen Goertzen reported that city workers had not been able to fill the tower since the pumps were not adequate to pump enough water. Goertzen has replaced two pumps, and the tower can now be filled and stay full.

Goertzen also reported that one of the wells needs to be chemically treated because it is high in magnesium and iron. Layne Western, Wichita, could chemically treat the well at a cost of $5,000 to $6,000. Western has also started an annual maintenance program on water wells which is done on an hourly basis. Goertzen said he would like to check into that program some more.

Linda Peters, administrator and CEO of Bethesda Home, attended the meeting to seek endorsement from the City of Goessel to apply for a grant from Kansas Wildlife and Parks to install lights along the walking path in Meadow Creek addition. The project will cost a total of $30,205, and Bethesda is requesting $24,164 in grant money. The difference will come from private donations.

The council voted 5-0 to endorse the grant application by Bethesda Home for the lighting of the walkway project.

Tony Epp questioned the possibility of the ditches being cleaned out throughout the town. He suggested getting bids from contractors to clean out the residential areas and bill the cost to the homeowner. Council member Racquel Thiessen suggested contacting other cities of comparable size to see what they do about cleaning out ditches.

Arlen Goertzen said he had seen a small scraper at the John Deere dealer in McPherson and he will check on the possibility of renting it. Council member James Wiens will check with McPherson County about what kind of equipment they have. No further action was taken.
