Other action by the county
— Marion County Commission was told Friday of another monthly increase in sales tax revenue. May revenue totaled $46,550, an increase from $36,041 a year before. A seven-month increase has netted the county an extra $42,500.
— A contract for solid waste pickup of county-owned trash containers at Marion County Park and Lake was awarded to the City of Marion. The City of Florence previously provided the service. Florence had provided the service since 1982 at a cost of $15,000 per year. Marion's bid per month was $3,892. Florence bid $4,100. A private firm bid $8,850.
— A fuel bid for the County Road and Bridge Department was approved. Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro had the winning bid of $8,342. Cardie Oil Company of Tampa presented a bid totaling $8,475.
— A bid of $3,096 for 360 gallons of 2, 4-D Amine for the County Noxious Weed Department was approved. Ag Service of Hillsboro will supply the chemical.
— Jack Chappelle was unofficially hired as the engineer for closure of the county's former landfill site.
Engineering costs of perhaps $35,000 and expenses of county workers would be the main costs. Closure is not urgent, but the county wants to appear "proactive."
"KDHE has not indicated an eminent problem with the site," Chappelle said. "The county just needs to let KDHE know the county wants to be proactive but has limited funds."
County costs will be an equipment operator, scraper, bulldozer, and someone to oversee the operation.
Chappelle will send a contract to the commission for review.
