Paul Rempel
Paul L. Rempel, 78, of Manhattan died Feb. 14, 2003, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.
Born March 8, 1924, in Hillsboro, the son of Jacob E. and Liese (Balzer) Rempel. He had been a Manhattan resident since 1962, moving there from Hillsboro.
He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1942, and attended Bethel College in North Newton.
He was a technician for the Marion County ABA for 11 years prior to working for the Kansas State Artificial Breeding Service Unit as a laboratory manager for 27 years, retiring in 1989.
Originally a member of the Brudertal Mennonite Church in Hillsboro, he was a founding member of the Manhattan Mennonite Church. He was involved in peace issues. He enjoyed inventing and building equipment for the lab, gardening, traveling, and hiking in the mountains.
On June 1, 1951, he married Nellie Schmidt at the Tabor Mennonite Church in Marion County.
Survivors include his wife of the home; children, Don Rempel of St. Louis, Mo., Laura and husband Richard Klocke of Lawrence, Terry Rempel and wife Sara of Manhattan, Trudy Rempel and husband Richard Schulz of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Lisa Rempel and husband Kevin Bertrandt of Gilbert, Ariz., Audrey and husband Perry Hunter of Portland, Ore.; sister, Lula and husband Herman Klaassen of Newton; brother-in-law, Clarence Unrau of North Newton; sister-in-law, Frances Rempel of Hillsboro; and seven grandchildren.
Cremation is planned with memorial services to be held at 2 p.m. March 3, at Manhattan Mennonite Church with Richard and Barbara Gehring officiating.
