Pauline Makovec

Pauline V. Makovec, 87, Pilsen, died Feb. 10, 2003, at St. Luke Hospital in Marion.

Born Jan. 15, 1916, near Pilsen, she was a daughter of Mathias and Eleanor (Neuwirth) Tajchman.

She grew up on the farm and graduated from Ramona High School. On Oct. 26, 1938, she married Albert Makovec at Pilsen. Two children were born, Robert and Patricia.

Pauline was known to many since she served the community as a waitress at the Durham and Lincolnville cafes. She enjoyed gardening, canning, raising flowers, and especially baking kolache and bread on Saturdays.

Pauline was a member of Holy Family Parish, St. John Nepomucene Church, Pilsen, and St. Ann's Altar Society.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carol Makovec, Ramona; a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Sy Martin, Mount Hope; a sister, Sylvia Beving of Ackley, Iowa; nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, who died June 4, 1977, and two sisters, Mary Holub and Joan Pratte.

The Rosary was recited Thursday evening in Pilsen, led by Fr. Steve Gronert. The Mass of the Resurrection was Friday morning, also at St. John Nepomucene Church, Holy Family Parish, Pilsen, with Fr. Steve Gronert as the celebrant and Charlene Svitak as organist. John Reznicek served as lector.

Gift bearers were Colleen Klug, Jennifer Makovec, Robyn Heitfield, and Cindy Voegeli. Casket bearers were Lonny and Gary Beving, Gerald and Kenny Holub, and Ron and Gail Makovec. Honorary bearers were Tim, Craig, and Curt Martin, Darren and Mark Makovec, and Ed Holub.

Interment was at the church cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established with St. John Nepomucene Church and the Pilsen Community Center.
