PBHS scholars bowl team state bound

The varsity PBHS scholars' bowl team won first place Thursday at the regional scholars' bowl tournament at Altoona Midway, with critical challenges greeting them throughout the evening.

They ended pool play with a three-way second-place tie. All three teams had four wins and two losses in the six-round play of the pool. Only one of the three teams could continue into bracket play.

Judges discovered none of the teams had dominated the other two teams when looking at the win/loss tally. They had each taken one win in the three-way tie. The judges moved on to investigate point spreads. On this basis, Peabody-Burns was declared the winner, allowing them to move into the semi-finals.

Peabody-Burns was not state-bound because only the first, second, and third place teams continue to state. They needed to win the first semi-final round against Oxford to qualify.

Jacob Wolf and Andrew Topham came out strong, both answering two questions each during the round, giving the Peabody-Burns team the win with a score of 40-0. Not only did this win qualify the team for state but also placed them in the final round with a chance of winning the regional tournament.

Facing Sedan, Wolf and Jesse Riggs found they were again in a tie for the second time that evening. Each team knew being first on the buzzer most likely would determine who would take home the first-place plaque for the 2006 regional scholars' bowl tournament.

Wolf again led his team to victory, with a 40-30 win.

The 2A Kansas State scholars' bowl tournament will be held at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Hutchinson Trinity High School.
