Peabody-Burns Warriors win one, lose one

Peabody-Burns High School Warriors boys' basketball team was defeated at home Tuesday by Sedgwick, 76-72. The team traveled to Little River Friday and won in a close game, 47-46. Next is tournament play at Burrton.

PBHS led early in the first quarter against Sedgwick. The Cardinals came back to tie the game with under three minutes to play in the period, 12-12. Sedgwick led at the buzzer, 18-14. Derek Benson paced the team with eight. Micah Hilliard, Nathan Bishop, and Derrick Simmonds each had a basket.

Warrior defense pressured the Cardinals in the second period and held them to 14 points. Warrior offense responded to put up 18, six from the free-throw line. Duane Unruh had nine, Bishop four, Benson three, and Hilliard added two. The score was tied at 32 at the half.

Fast defensive pressure from the Cardinals throughout the game created PBHS turnovers. The Warriors were down by as many as seven before they battled back to trail by one at the end of the third, 56-55. Simmonds found the basket from the perimeter, dumping in 13. Cole Welsh and Benson put in four each. Unruh added a basket.

PBHS took the lead in the fourth quarter, leading by five at the three-minute mark. The Cardinals came back to tie the score at 71 when a blatant Warrior technical foul put the Cardinals at the free-throw line with less than 20 seconds on the clock. Sedgwick went on to defeat PBHS, 76-71.

At Little River the Warriors led early in the first quarter, 10-5. Redskin offense surged back and with less than one minute to play in the period, Little River took a one-point lead at the buzzer, 17-16. Simmonds paced the team with 12. Unruh added four.

Both offenses slowed in the second period with both defenses turning up the pressure. Simmonds had the only three PBHS points in the quarter. Little River claimed a five-point lead at the half, 24-19.

In the third quarter, Warrior offense came back to tie the game at 26 with less than five minutes on the clock. Both offenses traded points for the remainder of the period. PBHS had the one-point edge at the end of the quarter, 35-34. Benson led the team with nine. Simmonds had five and Bishop added a basket.

A tight fourth quarter came right down to the wire. PBHS was down by one with just over a minute left in the contest. Unruh made a short shot from under the basket with nine seconds on the clock to take the lead. Warrior defense created a turnover and PBHS was able to run out the clock for the victory, 47-46. Bishop and Simmonds had three each. Benson, Trevor Hamm, and Unruh each added a basket.
