Pearl Janzen

Pearl Unruh Janzen, 96, of Hillsboro died April 13, 2002, at HCMC Long Term Care Unit in Hillsboro.

Born Aug. 27, 1905, in rural Tampa, she was the eldest of seven children born to David H. and Eva (Jantz) Unruh.

On Oct. 14, 1923, she was baptized by Rev. Henry H. Schmidt and became a member of Friedenstal Mennonite Church.

She attended Bell Rural School. She attended Hillsboro Bible Academy in Hillsboro and Bethel Academy in North Newton. After graduating from high school in 1926, she worked in the Schultz Store in Durham. She later taught school for two years at Waldeck School in rural Lehigh.

On May 24, 1929, at Tampa, she married Daniel D. Janzen. They farmed near Lehigh for 25 years and were active members of the Lehigh Mennonite Church.

Three children were born to them, Diana, Leo and Jane. In 1954, they moved to Warden, Wash., where they continued to farm, and were founding members of the Warden Mennonite Church.

In 1969, they returned to Lehigh to retire. Her husband Dan died in 1977.

She continued to be active in the Lehigh Mennonite Church where she taught the adult Sunday school class for many years and served as president of the Women's Mission Society. She was an active volunteer, cooking and sewing for the Mennonite Relief efforts and other fund-raising activities in the area. When the church closed, she transferred her membership to First Mennonite in Hillsboro.

She enjoyed gardening, quilting, embroidering, traveling and visiting friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Frank (wife Ruby) Unruh, Aaron (wife LeVeda) Unruh, and Leonard Unruh; sisters, Gertrude (husband Menno) Goertzen, and Mildred (husband Ted) Everhart.

Survivors include children, Diana Jantzen of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, Leo Jantzen and wife Sharen of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jane Janzen Zeok of Rosamond, Calif.; brother, Edward and wife Edith Unruh of Abilene; sister-in-law, Darlene Unruh of Hillsboro; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Tuesday at Lehigh Mennonite Cemetery in rural Lehigh.

A memorial has been established with Hillsboro Community Medical Center Long Term Unit.
