Penners nominated as favorite grandparents

Willis and Ruth Ann Penner of rural Hillsboro were nominated as favorite grandparents by their grandchildren in the Senior Fair 2004 to be held Sept. 21 in Salina.

Using the theme "Bridging the Generations," the Penners' grandchildren wrote 100 words or less about how their grandparents have modeled this year's theme at the senior fair.

Ruth Ann was the Goessel Agape Senior Center nutrition manager for more than five years.

Their grandchildren range in ages six through 19 and include Adam and Amber Goossen of Nebraska, Sheldon and Shane Leppke of McPherson, and Hannah, Isaac, Jessie, and David Perry of Canada, who will be moving to the Hillsboro area in October.

Their letter read: Grandpa and Grandma make us feel unique and special!

They made sure the family farm was 'grandchildren-friendly' with a playhouse, horses they saddled up when it meant a lot of extra work for them, craft projects Grandma did with us and then helped us enter in the fair, letting us use their four-wheeler and horses to entertain friends, special birthday parties they always seem to fit into their schedule, and so much more. They even cheered us on at soccer games before they understood the game.

Grandpa and Grandma's unconditional love makes them feel much younger than 70+!

The local County Council on Aging, Task Force, Commission, or Committee on Aging will choose the grandparent(s) to represent their respective county at the Senior Fair.
