Polish city wants to be Goessel's sister city

The Goessel City Council met July 17 at the Goessel Civic Center conference room.

Arlen Goertzen, public works director, reported that the city had received a bid of $615 from Kyle Funk to install a transfer switch in the water tower to change from line power to auxiliary power. The council approved the bid 5-0.

Goertzen also reported that one pump is not pumping as much as it should. He questioned whether to fill the tower using water from the Rural Water District to give the pumps a rest. The cost will be $2.40 per 1,000 gallons. The council agreed by consensus to fill the tower using water from Marion County RWD #4.

Mayor Peggy Jay recognized Officer Joe Base for graduating from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. The council voted 5-0 to have Rollin Schmidt remain on the Goessel Police force as a reserve officer.

The council reviewed the budget and cut training and travel expenses by one-half. Cuts were made in other areas to allow for the mill levy to stay the same. The assessed valuation for the city went down for the third consecutive year. City clerk Anita Goertzen will contact the appraiser's office for information as to why the personal property taxes continue to rise but assessed valuation continues to decrease.

Mayor Jay reported to the council about a village in Poland that would like to become a sister city with Goessel. Pawlowiczki, Poland, is a village near the birthplace of Captain Kurt Von Goessel. Henry Zamajski of Poland will present to the city a letter of greeting from Pawlowiczki and some other items during Threshing Days.

The city of Goessel will present Zamajski with a scrapbook of Goessel, being made by Angela Base, and a wheat straw picture of the prep school, being made by Marie and Martha Voth.

The council approved 5-0 to give Angela Base $100 for her time and supplies to make the scrapbook.

The ordinances for standard traffic ordinance 2003 edition and the uniform public offense code 2003 edition were approved 5-0.

The council voted 5-0 to purchase for $400 a 30-foot strip of land from Joyful Noise Child Care Center.

The next council meeting will be Aug. 14.
