Post 366 wins district title years ago
With three more victories this past weekend at the district four tournament in Marion, Hillsboro Post 366 claimed the championship.
The team is now an eye-popping 23-1 heading into the state tournament this weekend at Garden City.
Post 366 earned the title by defeating Salina in the first round 19-9, Hesston 13-4 in the second round, and Abilene in the championship game Monday, 15-11.
Assistant coach Lee Waldron said the team was a little tight early on after trailing in the early innings of the Salina game.
"They almost forgot baseball is still baseball, and you could tell the nerves were still there," he said.
But Waldron also felt his team would bounce back.
"I saw a lot of growth and leadership from our older guys take over," he said. "We trust the talent we have."
Catcher Travis Riesen earned the MVP award in game one, pitcher Tyler Ediger in game two, and Brian Palermo's 5-5 day at the plate earned him MVP of the championship game.
A victory at the state tournament will propel them to the regional tournament held July 24-29 at Charleston, Mo. The World Series will be played Aug. 7-16 at Newark, Ohio.
"We're going to go as far as we can," Waldron said.
