Postal rates to increase

According to the United States Post Office officials, postal rates will increase this Sunday, June 30. The cost to send a first-class letter will increase to 37 cents. The stamp became available to customers on June 7.

A new 3-cent star stamp became available in mid-June. That stamp can be added to the 34-cent stamp in order for customers to mail a letter first class.

"We ordered 15,000 of the 3-cent stamps," said Postmaster Norman Bouwie of the Hillsboro post office.

A variety of designs of the 37-cent stamp are available in Hillsboro.

According to Bouwie, the last increase of one cent came in June of 2001. The cost of mailing a first class letter increased from 33 cents to 34 cents.

Postal service officials said that the increase is needed to help with the cost of fuel, transportation, utilities, labor and other business expenditures.

Check with your local post office for flyers and brochures on the new postage rates on all mailings.
