Pre-schoolers invited to library

The Durham Community Library will start the fall, winter, and spring season for pre-school children ages three to five years old from 10 to 11:20 a.m. Please be prompt. Note the change to Thursday as the book van from Manhattan will deliver on Wednesday. Unless the weather is severe or an illness occurs the schedule time will be followed and residents will be notified.
Mothers, this is a great time to bring your pre-schoolers to help prepare them for kindergarten. They not only learn to be good listeners but also to write their name, learn the alphabet, memorize nursery rhymes, color, dramatize, and more.
On the first day, Sept. 9, bring a teddy bear or a small favorite toy for show-and-tell. We are happy to welcome the rural children as well as those from Tampa, Durham, Lehigh, or whatever your address may be. This is an invitation from Mary Helen Becker, librarian.
Guests that were invited for Sunday dinner at the Clayton and Wiebe home were Ken and Shelly Giesbrecht and Taylor, Doug and Starla Koehn, and Travis and Sharon Koehn and family.
On Tuesday, Ruston and Lydia Dirks entertained Bruce and Cheryl Dirks and Warren and Jane Unruh for supper. Thies was in honor of Bruce and Cheryl's birthdays which were Aug. 26 and 27.
Sunday supper guests of Richard and Charlotte Wiebe were Bruce and Cheryl Dirks, Duane and Louise Ratzlaff, and Harlan and Sheri Koehn and Mark.
Sunday, the Mark Unruh family, the Warren Unruh family, and the Ron Unruhs attended the Duerksen summer family picnic at Hesston College retreat center west of Hesston. The Warren Unruhs and the Lon Hieberts were hosts.
Ken and Sandy Wiebe, Dalton and Lorna Wiebe, Jeff and Monica Ratzlaff and Travis, and Sharon Koehn and family went to Moundridge Manor Sunday morning to do the worship services there. Ken and Sandy stayed to have dinner with the residents.
Wednesday supper guests of the Bruce Dirks family were Mike and Mich Rhodes and Madison, Dalton, and Lorna Wiebe and Ty and Karmita Johnson.
Wednesday evening, Clayton and Betty Wiebe went to visit Helen Wiebe at Moundridge Manor.
Gerald and Eva Davis invited Roy and Nadine Davis and family, the Ron Toews family, Dalton and Lorna Koehn, Rich and LaVae Koehn to be their Sunday dinner guests.
Saturday evening, Rick and LaVae Koehn had supper at the home of their parents, Roy and Nadine Davis.
Bruce and Cheryl Dirks invited Melvin and Vera Dirks, Howard and Charlene Becker and the Becker's grandchildren, Riley, Loralee, and Alissa Johnson Friday evening for visiting and refreshments.
Last week's news
This past week school started for many students in USD 410 for another busy year. On Aug. 30 about 18 students will return to the Cottonwood Grove Christian School near Durham. Teachers will be Lydia Strunk of Versailles, Mo., teaching upper grades; Denise Ensz of Farwell, Texas, middle grades; and Amy Koehn of Macon, Miss., lower grades. We hope all students everywhere will have a good, profitable learning experience and a safe year. Teachers all over have a big responsibility and we wish them well.
On Wednesday Jaraine Redger joined Darlene Unruh and Delilah Decker for dinner at Main Street Café.
Sunday guests for dinner at the home of Tim and Shelia Koehn were Ransom and Lillian Wiebe, Ruston and Lydia Dirks, Teresa Wiebe, and Nelson and Bev Wiebe and family.
Guests in the Harry Rhodes home for Sunday dinner were Harry and Lela Wedel, Clayton and Betty Wiebe, Jeff and Monica Ratzlaff, Errol and Mae Wedel, and Loretta Wiebe of Phoenix, Ariz.
Saturday Jaraine Redger went to Newton to attend a baby shower for her new great-granddaughter, Summer, and her mother, Jamie Brockman. On Sunday Randy and Tina Redger and Hannah were guests of the Redgers on the farm.
Saturday evening the Harry and Sheryle Rhodes, Calvin and Janene Wiebe and family, Ken and Shelly Giesbrecht and Taylor, Darrin and Meri Kay Rhodes and family, and Mike and Mich Rhodes and Madison had a picnic supper at the Branton Place. They helped Mich celebrate her birthday which was Saturday.
Aimee Stutzman of Buhl, Idaho, arrived Aug. 15 and spent until Friday with the Mark Unruh family. Aimee is Barb's niece and is attending Hesston College. While here, Aimee helped with the farm work.
Saturday evening Roy and Nadine Davis and girls went to Newton to be supper guests of Margie Jantz and Lena Koehn at their home. Other guests were the Arnold Koehns of Newton, the Roger Koehns of Burns, and the Richard Jantzes of Fairview, Okla.
Richard and Charlotte Wiebe entertained Dalton and Lorna Koehn, Marcel and Wendy Unruh, Mike and Mich Rhodes and Madison, Irving Isaac, and Henry Redger as their Sunday dinner guests.
It's good to hear that Palmer Base was able to come home on Aug. 11. With therapy he is slowly improving. Recent visitors at their house have been Harry Rhodes, Bruce Dirks, Mike Rhodes, Kevin Hall, Art and Mary Ann Nelson, Kenny Hall, Rod Ade, all from Gypsum; and Carl and Nada Wedel of Galva; Virgil Meyer and Luetta Fosbinder of Salina; Marlin and Hilma Bartel of Lehigh; Harley and Clarice Everhart of Gig Harbor, Wash.; and Alex Thayer. Sunday afternoon Jim and Betty Funk of Hillsboro and that evening Waldo and Doris Froese of Inman also were visitors.
Tuesday evening the Duane Ratzlaff and Mike Rhodes families went to view the beautiful flowers and have a picnic at God's Garden near Solomon. This was to help Mich celebrate her recent birthday.
On Tuesday Wanda Koehn and Lorna Wiebe went to Brookville, Miss., to visit their daughter and sister, Amy Koehn. While there, they helped her move into a trailer home and do some painting, etc. She plans to make that area her permanent home. Wanda and Lorna returned home on Friday.
Sunday Larry and Wanda Koehn and Warren and Jane Unruh went to Scott City to help their aunt, Mrs. David Decker, celebrate her 90th birthday.
On Sunday evening, Lola Redger went to Hesston where she met her brother, Elmer and Sophia Nightingale, of Carnegie, Okla., who had come for a family reunion. They then all went to hear a young men's gospel quartet from Hillsboro at the Garden Community Church west of Hesston. Members of the quartet were Brad Just, Jeremy Jordan, David Epp, and Ryan Vogt. Kristi Vogt, the Nightingales' granddaughter, was the pianist. The Nightingales returned home with Lola and were her house guests. On Monday they went to visit their cousin Wanda Strole at Herington and all had dinner together at a restaurant. In the afternoon they visited another cousin Leota Nash at a nursing home in Abilene. On Tuesday the Nightingales left for their home in Oklahoma.
