Prieb, Backis wed in Chicago

Carolyn Prieb, daughter of Lucille Prieb and the late Wesley J. Prieb of Hillsboro, and Robert Backis, son of Antionette Backis and the late Joseph Backis of Waukegan, Ill., were married in Chicago, Ill., Aug. 23, 2003.

Daughters of friends of the bride and groom processed in with instruments as the congregation sang an opening hymn. Laura Buttitta of Chicago carried a candle in memory of the fathers of the bride and groom. Marge Argyelan and Marty Butzen of Chicago, Ill., were attendants. Musician friends of the bride and the groom formed a music ensemble for the wedding.

Judy Harder, sister of the bride, of Hillsboro welcomed wedding guests with introductions of family members. Tom Backis, brother of the groom, of Waukegan; Gordon Prieb, brother of the bride, of Edwardsburg, Mi.; and Ruth Groff of Chicago read scripture and prayers. Mary Metzler Prieb of Edwardsburg, Mi., led the congregation in a peace meditation.

Rev. John Horan of Chicago officiated as the bride groom recited their vows. Rev. Keith Harder of Hillsboro ended the celebration with a congregational prayer and blessing over the bride and groom.

Following the wedding, friends and family gathered at St. Gertrude's social hall for a dessert reception and fellowship. Guests signed a guest book designed and created by Ann O'Connor of Chicago. Carolyn's extended family sang "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" before the cake was cut. Robert and Rhonda Prieb of Hesston, brother and sister-in-law of the bride, assisted with serving the cake.

Bridget Lowry, Ruth Groff, Lisa Groff, Laurie Hasbook, Nancy and Peter Buttitta, Katey Feit, Jenny Klauke Koll, Laurie and Ed Jacob, and Julie and Dave Scheib Feeley, all of Chicago, hosted the reception.

After a short honeymoon in Door County, Wisconsin, the bride and groom returned to their home in Chicago. She is a third grade teacher at Northside Catholic Academy, and he is a hearing officer in the circuit court of Cook County, Ill.
