Priel graduates from AmeriCorps
David Priel, son of Warren and Rosann Priel of Hillsboro, recently completed two years of service with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC).
Often dubbed the "domestic Peace Corps," AmeriCorps was established in 1993 as an umbrella organization for VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and NCCC.
Originally enrolling 20,000 members, the program now includes 40,000 members, most in the age range of 18-24.
Priel was headquartered in Washington D.C. During his second year of service, he was a team leader and served with his team in various locations throughout the eastern United States.
Projects included building homes for Habitat for Humanity, erosion control and prescribed burns in wilderness areas, restoring trails in national parks, and tutoring children in a charter school in the inner city.
His compensation included a biweekly allowance, room and board, uniforms, and an education award of $4,725 for each year of service.
Priel is a graduate of the University of Colorado. He plans to continue residency in the Washington, D.C., area and is on staff at the AmeriCorps Capital Campus as a member support specialist.
