Public turns out for feedlot hearings

About 75 people were in attendance May 16 at Peabody-Burns Elementary School for two public hearings before officials from Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The hearings took place at 5 and 7 p.m. and addressed the issue of expansion of two feedlots just southwest of Peabody, owned by Clarence Busenitz and Jeff Busenitz.

Michael Jones of the Wichita field office was the hearing officer in charge.

Jones said that each person who attended the hearing will get a copy of the proceedings as long as he or she signed in with a correct mailing address.

Jones gave an overview of the reason for each hearing and then gave members of the audience a chance to be heard.

People from Peabody and the surrounding area addressed Jones and the other KDHE staff members both in support of the expansion and against it.

No indication was given by KDHE staff about a decision. The community earlier was informed it would be at least 30 days, perhaps longer before a decision is made public.
