Randolph Penner

Randolph Vernon Penner, 81, of Freeman, S.D., formerly of Hudson, Wis., died Dec. 24, 2002, at Freeman Community Nursing Home.

Born Feb. 27, 1921, near Hillsboro, he was the son of Albert H. and Elizabeth (Risen) Penner.

On Dec. 29, 1946, he married Luella Tieszen. They lived in Newton, Hudson, Wis., and moved to Freeman, S.D. in 1999.

From 1942 to 1945, he served in CPS camps in La Pine, Ore., and Bowie, Md.

He attended Wichita State University and Bethel College in North Newton, obtaining a bacherlor's of fine arts degree.

He worked as an illustrator for printing, calendar, and aviation companies.

He was also a commercial artist, and then worked entirely in fine art specializing in watercolors.

He was a member of the Midwest Watercolor Society and American Society of Aviation Artists.

His paintings hang in private and corporate collections across the nation.

He wrote and illustrated a book, "A Harvest of Memories," depicting his young years on a Kansas farm.

Survivors include his wife of Freeman, S.D.

Services were held Jan. 9 at Salem Mennonite Church, rural Freeman, with Revs. S. Roy Kaufman and R. Alan James officiating.

Private burial of the cremains was at Rose Hills Cemetery in rural Dolton, S.D.

Musicians were Ruby Waltner, organist, and Jerry Graber, Lyle Preheim, Duane Kaufman, and Stuart Preheim, vocalists.

Undesignated memorials will be directed to the H.D. Penner Scholarship Fund at Bethel College in North Newton and the American Society of Aviation Artists.
