Reader says McDonald's not to blame
To the Editor:
For those who are considering boycotting other McDonald's stores for closing its store in Hillsboro and other small towns, consider this: Do you have a 401K or invest in mutual funds or IRAs? If so, you likely are getting returns from McDonald's Corporation.
What happens to all that money McDonald's makes every year? It goes to pay dividends to its stockholders and is reinvested to expand its business. If McDonald's doesn't make a profit, its stockholders get no returns.
Also, if McDonalds' returns in Hillsboro were so lucrative, why doesn't a group of locals get together, invest their money, and take it over? They could make a killing!
As for McDonald's being greedy, aren't we all greedy? Aren't we always wanting more wages and benefits? How many jobs do consumers create? How many risks do they take or investments do they make?
If we want to blame someone, let's blame the government for establishing policies and regulations that promote big business rather than individual initiative.
