Reading program to extend into July

This summer's reading program at the Goessel Public Library will culminate in a new event for older goal-reachers: a sleepover inside the library.

The library's summer reading program began last Wednesday, and sessions will meet once a week until Friday, July 17. That's when the students in the third through fifth grade class will spend the night inside the library building, watching videos and perusing the stacks.

This year's reading program theme is "Join the Winner's Circle," according to Goessel librarian Laura Dailey. Each age group will meet Wednesday morning at the library, with preschool meeting at 9 a.m., kindergarten through second grade meeting at 10 a.m., and third through fifth grade meeting at 11. There will also be an additional preschool session held Friday morning at 10. Each session lasts a half-hour to 45 minutes long.

Special guest reader Tina Friend will be joining some of the younger sessions, Dailey said.

Each age group will be given a reading goal to reach, with prizes going to the dedicated readers who meet their goals. Some children in the community are also participating independently, usually because their parents aren't able to take them because of work conflicts, Dailey said.

About 80 children are enrolled so far, Dailey said. There is no cost to participate in the program.
