Reason for pride

Last week, the USD 410 school board received good news about its students' ACT scores.

Once again, ACT scores from those seniors taking the test continue to rise, just as they continue to exceed the state and national averages.

Last year, the average composite score for the class of 2002 was 23.4. The average for all Kansas students was 21, and nationally that average is 20.2.

To those not familiar with the ACT, the difference of a few points might not seem like much. But in the ACT scoring system, getting a couple points more is a significant increase. The higher the score, the more weight given to each point.

So the numbers for Lehigh, Hillsboro, and Durham students are very encouraging.

What's also encouraging is that 90 percent of the class elected to take the test — 54 students out of 60 class members.

These numbers reinforce something we already know: the Hillsboro public school system ranks very highly among its Kansas counterparts.

And whom should we thank for these great scores? Not just the students who took the test, but the adults who supported them: the teachers.

It's the quality teachers of the USD 410 school system that expect excellence, that push their students to do their best.

They may not receive much glory, but they sure do deserve it.
