Residents express opinions about U.S.-50 and recent accidents years ago

Staff writer

"My main deal about those accidents is that drivers need to be aware of their surroundings."

"When I'm in a construction zone, I stop five car lengths behind the person in front of me; pull right toward the ditch; and always watch my rear-view mirror."

"I've told my wife, mom, dad, and sisters not to travel on U.S.-50."

"Talking to professional truck drivers, they said a responsible truck driver would have been paying attention when approaching a construction site."

Jessey Hiebert

"I think they should have closed the highway and re-routed the traffic around Peabody. It may have been an inconvenience, but it would have been safer."

"I don't like to stop on any highway so when there was construction, I traveled on K-15."

"I now have an extra 'umph' when I tell the kids to be super safe. Bill travels a lot and now I get more worried."

"I have family in northeast Kansas by Topeka and they called and asked 'You don't travel on that Highway 50?'"

Cathy Fish

"I always insist our daughter, Erin, especially come home on K-15. That corner of 13-mile Road and Highway 50 is dangerous when you are trying to turn off the highway. I still go that way, but I thought about not going that way. But Sunday, I remembered the construction was delayed until Wednesday so I went that way."

"Something is not right and something was done wrong on that highway."

Hank Wiebe

"They should have made it four lanes. I avoid 13-mile Road now. I don't want to sit at a stop light and have an accident because someone runs into me from behind. Out of habit I still go down 13-mile Road, but I turn at 150th and go to K-15."

Susan Schultz

"I'm taking a different stance. As a truck driver (farmer) I know it is hard to stop a semi at a short distance. I think after the first accident the construction company should have remedied some things from the first accident."

"Maybe they should have a car with lights that is well-marked and is always one mile behind the last vehicle stopped. Or they could have an audible construction warning for those who may be falling asleep."

"Also, many times truckers when traveling see so many construction signs that are bogus and no construction is there."

Brad Wiens

"I think they should put a four-way stop at Highway 50 and 13-mile Road junction. People may grumble but if it saves lives."
