Rhodes hired as new building inspector
After nearly two months of sifting through applicants, the City of Hillsboro has finally hired someone for its building inspector/code enforcement officer position.
Martin Rhodes is the new man on the job. He was chosen for the position two weeks ago, said City Administrator Steve Garrett.
The city was "just holding out for the right applicant," Garrett said.
Garrett received about 10 applications for the job. Rhodes was the best qualified, with his background in administration and contracting.
"He is best qualified to fill that position," Garrett said. "His background is extensive."
Rhodes begins work on Monday. And since his position is a new one for the city, he'll sort of be creating it as he goes, Garrett said.
Formerly, Hillsboro had the sole position of building inspector, which was held by Kermit Dirksen. He only worked part-time for the city.
Rhodes' new position, however, is a 40-hour week full-time job.
According to Hillsboro's official description of the dual positions, the building inspector is responsible for issuing building permits and inspecting buildings. The code enforcement officer is responsible for enforcing the city codes and dealing with those who violate the codes.
These two positions will become one job description for Rhodes.
