Richard Shelley

Richard M. Shelley, 77, Council Grove, died April 8, 2002, at the Morris County Hospital in Council Grove.

Born Dec. 13, 1924, at Granby, Mo., he was the son of Delbert and Mabel Beaver Shelley. In 1943, he graduated from Diamond High School in Diamond, Mo.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II where he served as a radio operator. He received the WWII Victory medal and the American Theatre, Asiatic-Pacific, and the Philippine Liberation ribbons.

He married Daqueta Barnett in Oswego on March 20, 1948.

In 1990, he retired from Flint Hills Rural Electric Company where he was the maintenance supervisor. He and his wife were gate attendants at Richi Cove on the Council Grove Reservoir for three years after retirement.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially turkey hunting. He also enjoyed gardening and training Brittany Spaniels as hunting dogs.

His survivors include his wife of the house, son, Phillip Shelley and wife Linda of Scott City; two daughters, Marcia Boring and husband Brent of Manhattan, formerly of Hillsboro, and Kyla Shelley Carney and husband Christian of West Des Moines, Iowa; seven sisters, Geraldine Casey of Chetopa, Cressie Warren of Parsons, Eva May Westervelt of Hallowell, Patsy Davidson of Flint, Texas, Melba Bockmann of Spanaway, Wisc., Shirley Justice of Irving, Texas, and Mary Nell Farris of Oswego; brother, Phillip Shelley of The Colony, Texas; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 11 at the Memorial Chapel of the Flint Hills in Council Grove. Graveside services, with Military Honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard, were held Thursday at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Altamont.
