Robert A. Arnold
Robert A. Arnold, 83, of Hillsboro, died Dec. 7, 2004, at Hillsboro Community Medical Center.
Born March 27, 1921, on a farm near Latham, he was the son of Orval and Elsie (McCullough) Arnold. He was a descendant of the original Mayflower Pilgrims.
He was baptized in the United Methodist Church, McPherson, graduated from McPherson High School, and attended McPherson College for two years.
After his military service in the U.S. Army, 35th Infantry Division during WWII, he served as a U.S. Post Office mail carrier in McPherson.
Sept. 18, 1943, he married Doris Jane Klassen in Hillsboro. They moved to Hillsboro in 1950 and opened Arnold Insurance and Real Estate agency. He was the general manager of Tip Top Credit Union from 1953-1983 and president and board chairman of Hillsboro State Bank.
He served as director of Kansas Credit Union League for 12 years, the first administrator of the State Credit Union Department, Democratic fourth district chairman, and as a delegate to the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
He was a member of Hillsboro United Methodist Church, president of the Marion County Fair for 13 years, former president of Hillsboro Golf Association, member of Kiwanis Club, and member of Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce. He also was a member of Hillsboro American Legion, Centre Masonic Lodge, and Isis Shrine.
He enjoyed silver smithing, KSU football games, walking, and golfing.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Jane (Klassen) Arnold, of Hillsboro; sons, Larry G. Arnold and wife Sally, Castle Rock, Colo., and Dr. Robert J. Arnold and wife Marge, McPherson; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at Hillsboro United Methodist Church with Rev. Laney Kuhn officiating. Burial was at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Cemetery.
Musicians were Kathy Decker, organist, and Rod Koons, vocalist. Casket bearers were Rob Arnold, Kelly Arnold, Brad Perske, Ennis Unruh, Carl Long, and Wes Loewen.
A memorial has been established at Hillsboro United Methodist Church.
