Rubel to head Tabor football
Robert Rubel will take over the helm of the Tabor College football program effective immediately, according to athletic director Don Brubacher.
Rubel will fill the role previously held by Mike Gardner, who recently resigned to accept the head football coach position at Malone College, Canton, Ohio.
"Robert has an excellent football background," said Brubacher. "We like the variety of his background in coaching as well as the fact that he has worked as a coordinator in several places and been successful in that."
Rubel comes to Tabor from Abilene (Texas) Christian University, where for the past two seasons he has served as offensive assistant, assistant athletic director/compliance, kickers coach and academic coordinator. While there, the Wildcats' offense improved 100 yards per game and they picked up victories over four top 10 teams. They also placed second in the Lone Star Conference in net punting.
Prior to his stint at ACU, Rubel served as defensive coordinator at Oklahoma Panhandle State University, Goodwell, Okla., who posted a 6-5 record to mark the school's first winning season in 10 years. The program was also voted one of the 10 most improved programs in NCAA Division II football.
He also was defensive coordinator at North Dakota State College of Science during 2002, which finished ninth nationally in total defense, giving up only eight points per game in conference play. The defense improved 76 yards per game from the previous season, and the team finished the season as Graphic Edge Bowl champions.
As defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Cisco (Texas) Junior College from 2000-01, the defense finished 13th in the country in total defense, first in interceptions and third in pass defense. The defense improved 83 yards per game in the two seasons he was there.
Rubel also has coached at Kermit and Henrietta high schools in Texas and Perry (Okla.) High School.
