October was filled with a variety of activities at Hillsboro Long Term Care Unit. On Oct. 4, residents made potato curls. On Oct. 9, Debbie Dick's first grade class and residents worked on decorating pumpkins. The first graders took two of the pumpkins to their classroom, and two were left at the facility. They enjoyed pumpkin cake for refreshments.

Residents and staff members ventured to the Salina Wildlife Refuge on Oct. 11. Residents enjoyed lunch at the snack bar before they loaded the tram which took them around the refuge to see the animals.

Martha Klein, Elsie Gerlach, and Elda Riesen-Stean attended the senior citizens annual meeting in Marion with several staff members.

Residents celebrating their birthdays in October were Ruth Peters, Martha Klein, Ed Urbanek, Dorothy Funk, Augusta Kleiber, and Adney Stean. Phyllis Meisinger brought in cake on Oct. 11 to celebrate Dorothy Funk's birthday with residents and staff. Ruth Peter's family had a coffee for friends and family on Oct. 18.

Residents worked on Halloween bags for the kindergartners on Oct. 30. The kindergartners paraded in the hallways on Halloween Day. Residents had a special meal at noon which included barbecue brisket, hash browns, Harvard beets, and pumpkin bars. A Harvest party was held in the afternoon. Rosy Ollek and Bud Unruh guessed how many candy pumpkins we had in the jar. John Rempel guessed the weight of the pumpkins. Residents enjoyed taking a swing at the pumpkin pinata. Refreshments were hot chocolate and human chow.
