Slow "buzzer reflexes" stymied the Hillsboro High scholars' bowl team this past Thursday at a five-team tournament at Southeast of Saline.
Losing by only a few questions in each round, the team of Daniel Berg, Max Thiel, Mathew Brown, Cody Blackketter, and Sam Bookless, finished1-4 overall.
"The guys competed well," said coach Stuart Holmes. "but were often buzzed out by the other team on questions we knew."
In a scholars' bowl contest, competitors buzz in, like on TV game shows. The first person to buzz in gets to answer for their team.
"It just depended on who buzzed in first," said Holmes.
But if the team member misses the question, any of the opposing competitors get the opportunity to answer.
If a competitor buzzes in before the question is completely read by the moderator and is wrong, their team loses five points and the opposing team gets a chance to answer.
"Being quick on buzzing in each round is important," he added.
The team's next league meet is Jan. 27, followed by regionals Feb. 1.
