Scholars take fourth
Goessel High School Scholars' Bowl team competed Nov. 29 at Hesston with 30 teams. The Bluebirds came home with fourth place.
Goessel defeated teams from much larger schools in pool play like McPherson, Wichita Collegiate, and Andale.
In the quarter finals, the game was tied on the last question.
"Smoky Valley buzzed in first and answered the question, and the moderator announced 'That is correct', but the judge overruled the moderator," GHS scholar Kyle Unruh said. Goessel answered the question correctly and won the match.
In the semi final match, the Bluebirds lost a close match with Wichita Independent. In the third place match they lost another close match to county rival Hillsboro.
The team consisted of Kyle Unruh, Brady Peters, Evan Janzen, Adam Goering and Janessa Wedel.
"We don't have as many meets scheduled this year, said Peters. "So we participated in this one with large schools."
Coach Bruce Stucky was pleased with the performance.
