School district receives just half of state aid

Once again, Kansas' monthly payment to state school districts has fallen short.

Along with every other school district in the state, the Durham-Hillsboro-Lehigh school district only received half of its regular monthly state aid payment this June, according to Jerry Hinerman, business manager for USD 410.

The state aid payment was due Monday. The check arrived on time, but Hillsboro only received $175,062 — 50 percent of its expected monthly payment.

But it isn't the first time, Hinerman said — since December of 2001, the state's education payment has been late almost every month, he said.

The state has told USD 410 that it will receive the rest of the money by the end of June, and that's what the district is counting on, Hinerman said.

Despite the temporary funds shortage, local teachers and staff will still get paid. But those who've asked for their summer salary in a lump sum will receive that check a little later than usual.

The district usually sends out lump sum teacher paychecks in the beginning of June. Because of the funding uncertainties — which the district anticipated — Hillsboro decided to hold off mailing the checks until early next week, Hinerman said.
