School district signs revitalization plan

Unified School District 410 Board of Education met Monday evening at the technology center at Hillsboro High School.

The board heard from Marion County Commissioner Dan Holub who spoke about the county revitalization plan discussed at the July board meeting.

The Marion County Clerk sent a request to USD 410 to support and participate in the revitalization plan for all of Marion County. The plan would grant a property tax reduction for improvements to property and new buildings.

The board voted unanimously to sign the agreement supporting the plan.

Evan Yoder, Hillsboro Elementary School principal, said although enrollment hadn't begun, there are 10 new students at HES. So far only three students have moved away. He said things were coming together for the start of the new school year.

Corey Burton, Hillsboro Middle School Principal, told the board he and the HMS staff were gearing up for the school year. He said this is an adoption year for curriculum in social studies, and the curriculum mapping and decision process would be a large part of this year's agenda. The curriculum for social studies follows a five-year rotation.

Activities director Max Heinrichs outlined the fall athletics heat plan.

If the predicted temperature is above 95 degrees for next week (Aug. 15-20), above 98 degrees for Aug. 22-27, or above 100 degrees for Aug. 29-Sept. 3, afternoon practices for football, tennis, and cross country will be moved to the evening starting no earlier than 6 p.m.

Heinrichs said the first volleyball practice would be held at 12:01 a.m. Monday, the start day for all fall practices. Following the early morning volleyball practice, the high school and middle school teams will practice from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Cross country will practice at 6:30 a.m., girls' high school tennis will practice from 6 to 8 p.m., and high school and middle school football practice also will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

High school principal, Dale Honeck, said new teacher training is Friday.

Office and clerical support for the new TEEN director Chris Moddelmog was discussed. Relocation of the director to USD 410 will require the district to provide additional support for the TEEN program. The board approved the allocation of time for Jerry Hinerman, board clerk, and Carla Harmon, district treasurer, to work with Moddelmog. Their time, office supplies, and postage used will be reimbursed by the TEEN program.

The board approved the agreement between TEEN and USD 410 to provide needed support in the annual amount of $2,273.65 for the 11-month period for the 2005-06 school year.

Proposed revisions to the board policy manual were presented. Revisions include changes to the school year, field trip, local wellness, and student self-administration of medication policies were accepted.

Employment contracts for girls' basketball coach, media center aide, and additional duties for the district clerk and treasurer were considered and approved.

The new assistant high school girls' basketball coach will be Dennis Boldt, and Eileen Rader will serve as the new after-school aide in the Wiebe Media Center.

A new assistant cross country coach was approved. According to Heinrichs, the high school cross country team is expected to have 28 students participating this fall.

"Even if we have only 20 students," said Mohn, "I think we have issues of supervision."

Bids for a set of mobile bleachers were reviewed. Century Industries' bid of $37,939 was approved. Tabor College and USD 410 have agreed to purchase a set of bleachers and share the use of them.

In other business:

— Building and maintenance director Keith Goossen reported which buses need to be replaced this year. Goossen the annual inspection of the school vehicles revealed only one bus light that needed attention.

— Mohn told the board the increase in total general fund growth for the 2005-06 year would be approximately $218,000 and an expected increase to the district would be about $440,000.

— The budget hearing will be published Aug. 18. The budget hearing will be at 8 p.m. Sept. 1. The deadine for submitting the budget to Marion County Clerk and KSDE is Sept. 7.

— The board heard a request by Hillsboro Arts and Crafts Fair to use a bus on Sept. 17.

— Carla Harmon was approved as an authorized signer for KPERS.

— An archery club was added as an authorized account in the HMS/HHS activity fund.

— Gifts accepted were $250 from the HHS site council to cover the costs of a presentation on Internet safety, $340 from Hillsboro Lions Club for the purchase of four family swim passes, and $170 from the Hillsboro Noon Lions Club for the purchase of two family swim passes. Total contributions to the district since July 1, 2004, have been $43,814.

— An executive session was held to discuss reopening salary negotiations with teachers. No action was taken.

The next regularly scheduled USD 410 Board of Education meeting will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 in the high school technology center.
