School maintenance crews work during holiday vacation

Not everyone in the Hillsboro school system gets a Christmas vacation.

For the Hillsboro school district's maintenance employees, the week and a half hiatus for students is a prime time to complete some maintenance projects that can't be done during the school year.

"We get those extra things done," said Keith Goossen, maintenance supervisor for USD 410.

Much of what Goossen's maintenance crew tackled during the week after Christmas involves intense cleaning — the kind of thorough cleaning that's hard to accomplish when the students are in class, Goossen said.

Some of the areas Goossen plans to target include the boys' dressing rooms at the high school, restrooms, and some classrooms. Maintenance personnel will also clean furniture in the elementary building.

Other maintenance projects the district hopes to finish before the students return to class include replacing exit lights and installing a computer monitor in the technology center.

One major project facing USD 410 is the sanding and refinishing of the Robert C. Brown Gymnasium floor. But such a huge project will take more time than the maintenance crew has right now, Goossen said, and the district will tackle that job next summer.
