School shots available Tuesday
Immunizations are available for USD 410 students from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Marion County Health Office, Third and Main streets, Marion.
The Marion County Health Department and Kansas Department of Health and Environment are reminding parents of new vaccine requirements for kindergarten students.
A regulatory change requires that kindergarten students entering the 2004-05 school year be vaccinated for hepatitis B and varicella (chickenpox).
The first dose of the three-dose series for hepatitis B must be taken before school begins. The two remaining doses are required once the child enters school. Varicella requires only one dose.
Generally, each child will be required to receive the following vaccinations before enrolling in any Kansas school: diphtheria, hepatitis B, rubella (measles and German measles), mumps, pertussis (whooping cough), poliomyelitis, tetanus, and varicella, unless proof of prior varicella disease is provided.
A signed statement of a physician or a parent indicating the child's date of the illness or laboratory evidence of varicella immunity will suffice.
Each pupil's immunization record must document vaccinations from a licensed physician or local health department.
Vaccines also are available on a regular basis at the Health Department from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday, and to 6 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month.
