Schuber turns 100 years ago

Ella (Hamm) Schuber celebrates her 100th birthday today, Aug. 22, at Salem Home with residents, staff, relatives, and friends.

She was born in Russia. Ella had a twin sister, Amanda, who died at the age of 89.

She and her family came to America in 1906, settling in Michigan. After living there for a short time, the family moved to Kansas.

In 1921, she married Solomon (Sollie) Schuber. The couple had a double wedding with her brother, William and Sollie's sister, Leah.

The couple were farmers living in the Tampa area. They also lived in Hillsboro for a short time. After 38 years of marriage, he died. She continued to live on the farm until she moved to Durham. When her health began to fail, she moved to HCMC Long Term Care Unit, where she has been a resident for the last three years.

Ella was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Ladies Aid at the First Baptist Church in Durham.

She loved to garden and grow flowers, which she brought to the church. She especially loved to grow roses.

She also loved to do textile painting. She made Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, giving them away to family and friends. She later received orders to make the dolls from others.

She donated some of her dolls to the Wichita Children's Home and was honored for giving her dolls to the girls at the home.

Another one of her many talents was piecing quilts. Her favorite was the log cabin pattern. She also enjoyed baking.

She and her husband had one daughter, Irene. Irene and her husband, Warren Brenner, were killed in a boating accident.

Ella has two grandchildren, Anita and her husband Richard Miller of LaCanada, Calif.; and Dana and wife Kathy of Champion, Ill. She also has five great-grandchildren, two of whom are married.
