Second public hearing granted by KDHE
Kansas Department of Health and Environment has announced a second public hearing for the Peabody community to address issues associated with feedlot expansion southwest of town.
Jeff Busenitz filed an application with KDHE to expand his confined animal feeding operation to 999 head of cattle. Preliminary approval of his application was given by KDHE. He lives southwest of Peabody on 60th Street.
The public had until April 15 to appeal to KDHE for a public hearing on the matter. Rick Brunetti of the North Central Environmental Office in Salina said Tuesday that enough letters were received from the community to proceed with the public hearing.
A hearing on the expansion of a feedlot owned by Busenitz's father Clarence already has been scheduled for May 16 at the Peabody-Burns Elementary School multi-purpose room.
The second hearing will be held the same evening according to Brunetti, but times for each have not yet been determined.
Members of the public may address the hearing officer or present written comments regarding the expansion of either or both feedlots.
More information will be available in the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin at a later date.
