Sewer project is $1.4 million under estimate

Staff reporter

At long last Hillsboro City Council was able to take the long-awaited next step in the city's sewer lagoon replacement.

The council reviewed bids Tuesday from various contractors and approved the low bid of $2,342,266 from APAC-Shears Kansas which also included alternate A.

The bid was approved with the contingency that Kansas Department of Health & Environment and USDA Rural Development also approved the low bid.

A KDHE loan will be used by the city to keep the project moving forward while Rural Development finalizes the financial details.

The low bid came in $1.4 million less than anticipated when the project first was designed several years ago. The city was awarded a total of $5.3 million in loan and grant funds for the project.

A complete story of the council meeting will be in next week's edition.
