Shallenburger carries county in primary
About 25 percent of registered voters in Marion County cast ballots Tuesday in the primary election.
Tim Shallenburger won the Republican nomination for governor in the county, and the state.
Congressman Jerry Moran, who ran unopposed, received the most votes on the Republican ballot, 1,755. Gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Sebelius received the most votes on the Democratic ballot, 329.
There were 2,300 ballots cast out of 9,065 registered voters.
Highest percentage turnout was 52 percent in Fairplay Township, where 44 of 85 voters cast ballots. Lowest was in Wilson Township, where 24 of 157 voters, or 15 percent, cast ballots.
Highest actual turnout was Hillsboro Second Ward, where 292 voters (27 percent) voted. Lowest was Logan Township, where 10 of 48 (21 percent) voted.
Marion County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Friday to canvass ballots. Provisional ballots also will be reviewed.
Voter registration opened Wednesday for the Nov. 5 general election. Anyone 18 years old on or before that date should register now. Voter registration closes Oct. 21.
