Shallenburger carries county vote

Half of Hillsboro's registered voters make it to the polls

Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim Shallenburger carried Marion County in the general election Tuesday.

Of the 4,854 voters casting ballots, Shallenburger received 2,589 votes.

Kathleen Sebelius, Democratic candidate for governor, received 2,095 votes.

Marion County results for other state races were: secretary of state, Ron Thornburgh, 3,552, David Haley, 936; attorney general, Phill Kline, 2,477, Chris Biggs, 2,255; treasurer, Lynn Jenkins, 3,088, Sally Finney, 1,601; and insurance commissioner, Sandy Praeger, 3,015, Jim Garner, 1,608.

First District Congressman Jerry Moran received the most votes of any candidate on the ballot. The 4,257 votes he received represented about 92 percent of ballots cast.

Overall turnout in the county was about 53 percent, higher than expected, officials said.

Results of write-in votes will be announced Friday following canvassing of ballots. Iris Van Meter, who faced a write-in challenge for Kansas Board of Education, received 2,362 votes, about 73 percent of votes cast for the position in Marion County.

County commissioner Bob Hein, who was unopposed, received 1,485 votes, about 98 percent of the votes cast in his district.

There were 289 advance ballots cast out of 347 requested, a return of about 83 percent.

Precincts with the highest turnout on Tuesday were Fairplay Township, where 62 of 86 registered voters (72 percent) cast ballots, and Tampa City, where 58 of 83 voters (70 percent) participated.
