The Gear Grinders placed second overall out of 16 teams competing. The team also earned second in the missions competition, first place for its oral presentation, and won the team spirit and sportsmanship competition.

Team members are Jessica Goertzen, Kristen Hoffman, Karina Harvey, Aspen Frey, Austin Cooper, Cameron Stultz, Sierra Dirksen, Tyler Dickerson, Weston Hiebert, Evan Hiebert, Chad Wedel, and Isaac Fast. The team is coached by John Fast and Ilona Abrahams.

The competition is sponsored by the department of education and the department of engineering at WSU. Team members had to build five machines made from Legos and programmed by the computer to accomplish five different Olympic-type events.

One machine was constructed and programmed to jump, run, and throw for the triathlon.
