Soyez-Kent team up for golf wins at Herington

The weather was too windy for gentleman's golf April 3, but the blustery conditions couldn't stop Hillsboro High School's Elliot Soyez and Justin Kent from winning the two-man competition at the Herington Invitational, or keep Soyez from posting the lowest overall score for the single's title.

"It was a very windy day, and the Herington course sets up on top of a hill, so there was no protection," said Trojan coach Scott O'Hare.

Soyez, a sophomore, shot an even par on the front nine and wound up with a four-over-par 76 for the low score of the day.

His partner, Kent, a junior, fired an 82, good enough for fourth place overall; and giving them a two-man score of 158.

Goessel's Zach Frey shot a 78 for second place behind Soyez. His partner, Nathan Ensz, shot a 90, to give Goessel a two-man total of 168 for second place behind Hillsboro.

"It was nice to see [Soyez and Kent] start out the season pretty well," O'Hare said. "I really expected it of them, but I'm glad they came through."

Darren Enns and Daniel Miller also competed for the short-staffed Trojans.

"This tournament didn't really give us an indication of where we are as a team, as at least two, maybe three of the anticipated varsity players were unable to compete," O'Hare said.

The Trojans should be at full strength at 2 p.m. Thursday for the Hillsboro Invitational at the home course.

"That should give us a better indication of where we stand as a team," O'Hare added.
