Spartans outlast Trojans, 45-34 years ago

The Hillsboro High School girls' basketball team played with Wichita Collegiate Tuesday night for almost three quarters before the Spartans pulled away for a 45-34 victory.

Collegiate began the game with three quick baskets and led 7-2 with a little more than four minutes into the game. A two-pointer by JuliAnne Chisholm, a three-pointer by Hannah Marsh, a basket and free throw by Amy Duerksen, and two free throws by Emily Ratzlaff gave the Trojans a 10-9 lead at the end of the quarter.

Collegiate outscored the Trojans 12-10 in the second quarter to take a one-point lead into half time.

The Spartans took a 30-22 lead in the third quarter and the Trojans never got closer than six points for the rest of the game. Hillsboro was 8-14 at the free throw line but missed three one-and-one opportunities in the second half.

Chisholm led the team with 12 points and Marsh put in eight. Ratzlaff led the team in rebounds with six and Chisholm pulled down five.

The Trojans played Saturday for third place at the Chapman Tournament, losing 44-42 to Abilene.

The score was tied 22 all at half. The Trojans pulled ahead by seven points in the third quarter with good ball handling and good defense. In the fourth quarter, Abilene fouled the Trojans and the Trojans couldn't capitalize on the free throws.

"The difference in the ball game was in the fourth quarter," said coach Becky Carlson. "They fouled us, we didn't make all of free throws, and they took the ball to their end of the court and scored."

Sophomores JuliAnne Chisholm and Hannah Marsh were scoring leaders. Chisholm was five of eight of two pointers and four of nine of three pointers for 14 points. She also pulled down four rebounds. Marsh was four of seven in two pointers and three of five of free throws for 11 points, She led with team in steals with three.

The Trojans lost to Chapman in round and defeated Rock Creek in round two.

Hillsboro defeated Rock Creek 49-37 behind 26 points from senior leaders, Amy Duerksen and Emily Ratzlaff. Duerksen was three for five in two-pointers and eight of nine of free throws for 14 points. She also led the team in rebounding with 11.

Ratzlaff was two of four in two-pointers, two of five in three pointers, two of three of free throws for 12 points.

The girls lost to Chapman 45-36. Chisholm had 14 points; Duerksen, nine; Marsh, eight. Duerksen led the team in rebounds with six.

The Trojans with a 1-3 record end the first half of the season Friday at home against the Ellinwood Eagles. Game time is 5 p.m.

Junior varsity

The high school junior varsity girls' basketball team defeated Rock Creek 41-27 Friday in the Chapman Tournament.

Jessica Heidel led the team in scoring with 14 points. Audrey Weinbrenner had 10 points; Lora Andrews, five; Jenny Whisenhunt, four; and Megan Peachey, Samantha Heinrichs, Tina Frick, and Amy Neufeld, two points each.
