Speaker brings magic to HHS

Staff writer

Rick Nielsen, founder and president of Blueprint for Life, entertained Hillsboro High School students Monday at an assembly.

Nielsen did magic tricks with audience members, juggled, entertained, and then spoke to the students about the impact of the spoken word.

"In the 22 years that I have been working with inmates, I've learned that there is an incredible power in the spoken word. We have programmed failure for a lot of people with the words that have been spoken to and about them," said Nielsen.

Don Krebs, Director of Student Success Initiatives at Tabor College, arranged to bring Nielsen to Marion County. Besides HHS, Nielsen also spoke at Marion Junior/Senior High School. He entertained prospective students and their parents at Tabor College's convocation and spoke with Tabor's football and basketball teams.

"I thought the students were so responsive to him," said Krebs. "He was very good and challenged the students."

Dale Honeck, HHS principal, said Nielsen had an important message for the students, and he hoped they learned from the assembly.

"You can always find something good to say about everyone, and it will make them appreciate you for having said it," said Honeck.

Nielsen told the students to be careful. Negative words and comments can leave scars and they can steer people to life or death.

"A lie is forever," Nielsen said. "We can never take the words back."
