Speaking of sub-state

Tuesday night, I witnessed something that I thought I'd never see: a Marion County traffic jam.

Technically, the traffic wasn't exactly in the county — but it did involve a multitude of cars from the county.

If you were in Lyons Tuesday, you know what I'm talking about. And if you weren't in Lyons Tuesday — well, you're in the minority.

Because Hillsboro fans packed half the gym Tuesday. They'd journeyed 60 miles to see the girls and guys teams compete for the sub-state crown.

There's only one main way to Lyons, and that's U.S.-56. So, of course, on the way back, most sane people would take the same route.

That's why headlights and tailights seemed to stretch infinitely in front of and behind me Tuesday night as I made my way home. Definitely a strange sight.

Anyone else on that highway have a "Field of Dreams" flashback?

And did anyone else find that stuffed lion in the lobby creepy?

The Lady Trojans may have lost a heartbreaker on the court Tuesday night, but off the court they were still winners.

Yes, it's a cliché — but true. How many people, after losing such an important game, would have the inner strength and character to jump back into the crowd to cheer on the guys' team?

Honestly, I don't think I would have. I'd be too upset to stay in the building.

But the Lady Trojans are strong — not just in the way they scrambled for every steal and point until the final seconds ticked off the clock, but in the way they were able to accept the loss with dignity.

That's probably not much consolation to them, but to me, that's more valuable than a plaque.

Did anyone else notice that the Hoisington coach must have called at least 40 or 50 timeouts during overtime of the guys' game?

What a game — that's what Kansas basketball is all about.

Now that sub-state is over, I think it's fitting for me to say thank you to the HHS girls' basketball team for a great season.

This year was my first covering basketball as a reporter, and I can honestly say that it's been the most fun part of my job for the past few months.

I'm especially grateful to Becky Carlson, the coach who was always willing to talk to an annoying reporter after a game, even after losing. She made my job easy.

And good luck to the guys at Hutch — I hope you go far.
